We’re brighter together.

Solar panels have been around for decades, dotting rooftops and supplying energy to reduce energy bills and carbon footprints. Rooftop solar is a major investment and may not be the right fit for every customer — that’s why OPPD Community Solar is here, to let you power your home with renewable energy, and without hassle.

Now, community solar programs give homeowners a chance to do the same thing as part of a coordinated group effort through solar farms. OPPD's five megawatt solar farm located near Fort Calhoun, Neb., has been supplying clean renewable energy to the electric grid since 2019.

By enrolling in OPPD’s Community Solar Program, you join a team working together to produce clean energy today in support of a greener tomorrow. You’ll get benefits like:

  • Affordable solar energy, without the cost and hassle of installing solar panels on your home.
  • Contribute to a cleaner environment with quantifiable results.
  • The first chance at potential financial savings, based on the market value of solar energy and the OPPD solar farm.

The community solar rate for 2024 is a $0.28 debit (charge) per share, per month. In the future, participants may receive credit instead!

How It Works

OPPD Community Solar Program participants subscribe to one or more shares. Each share represents 100 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. You’ll receive a separate solar charge item on your monthly bill, calculated as shown below. A one-time refundable deposit of $100 will be added to your first bill after subscribing. That $100 will be refunded after completing five years in the program.

After that, your monthly solar charge will be a monthly contribution based on your number of shares when the solar farm generates energy.

Here’s an example: an average home of 2,000 square feet uses approximately 1,000 kWh of electricity each month (including net-metering customers). That’s a regular electricity bill of around $100 each month.

Subscribing to a single share (100 kWh of electricity) costs $0.28 each month, meaning that 10% of your monthly usage is covered by renewable energy. Using the same numbers, 10 shares would cover 100% of your monthly usage for only $2.80 more.

How OPPD's Community Solar Rate Works. You use 1,000 kWh per month (For illustrative purposes only. Based on the average kWh usage of a 2,000 sqft home.). You choose to subscribe to 1 solar share (One share is approximately 100 kWh of solar energy.). Your standard service charge is $30.00. Your standard energy charge is $85.00 ($0.085 X 1,000 kWh). Your community solar charge would be $1.00 ($1.00 X 1 share) (Rate is for illustrative purposes only and does not reflect the current rate.). You pay just $1.00 more than a nonparticipant for renewable energy.

Why OPPD Created the Community Solar Program

We commit to providing you with affordable, reliable and environmentally sensitive energy services. OPPD researched the possibility of creating a community solar program and found that the idea was widely popular with both residential and business customers.

The solar farm is east of Fort Calhoun and came online in December 2019. It can produce 5 MW of solar energy, separated and portioned out to subscribed customers. By participating in the program, you contribute to a portion of the solar energy generated at the facility — and to a better, brighter future.

We’re here to help.
