Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Stay safe and healthy with federal financial aid.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) makes financial assistance available to low-income households with immediate energy needs. This federal program helps families afford the electricity needed to stay warm during the winter, cool in the summer and keep the lights on year-round.
What does LIHEAP cover?
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) disburses federal financial aid to eligible families and individuals in several areas. Households are still responsible for any remainder of payments not entirely covered by LIHEAP funds.
LIHEAP can help with the following services:
- Heating Assistance — from October 1 through March 31
- Cooling Assistance — from June 1 through August 31
- Crisis Assistance — available year-round
- Furnace and Central A/C Repair and Replacement Assistance — up to $750
- Window Air Conditioner Purchase Assistance — must be eligible for cooling assistance
Services provided by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy through LIHEAP:
- Weatherization Services
- Heating and Cooling Repair and Replacement Assistance (HCRRA) — up to $5,000

Who is eligible for LIHEAP in Nebraska?
To qualify for LIHEAP, a household must fulfill all the following requirements:
- Have income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (see DHHS table)
- Meet the LIHEAP citizenship and residency requirements
- Be responsible for home energy utilities
- Not be otherwise disqualified or ineligible
NOTE: Each LIHEAP service type has specific requirements. Weatherization and HCRRA have different eligibility requirements. Check eligibility and requirements through DHHS.
How do I apply for LIHEAP?
Individuals can request or apply for LIHEAP through DHHS online, in-person at a DHHS Office or by calling iServeNebraska at 800-383-4278.
