The National Weather Service (NWS) recognized Omaha Public Power District as a StormReady® Community Partner. They formally presented the utility with a certificate this afternoon at the utility’s Energy Control Center in Omaha. This honor highlights OPPD’s ongoing commitment to the safety of its employees and the resilience of the utility’s operations during extreme weather events.

The StormReady® program is a nationwide initiative that uses a grassroots approach to help communities and organizations develop plans to handle all types of extreme weather - from tornadoes and floods to blizzards and hurricanes. The program encourages communities to take a proactive and innovative approach, with clear-cut guidelines, on how to improve local hazardous weather operations by providing emergency managers with proactive guidelines on how to improve their hazardous weather operations.

Over the years OPPD has worked closely with the National Weather Service to improve our preparedness strategies and ensure the safety of our workforce. Tonya Ngotel, manager of Emergency Preparedness for OPPD, expressed gratitude for the designation and for the great relationship the utility has with the National Weather Service.

“We have worked closely with the National Weather Service, particularly over the past couple of years,” said Ngotel. “Our cooperative efforts have ensured that our employees remain safe. They have also helped to boost the resiliency of our utility operations.”

Becoming a StormReady® Community Partner means more than just earning a designation - it reflects OPPD’s culture of readiness, communication, and ongoing improvement in hazardous weather operations.
